When your brain is injured, physically or chemically, the body immediately makes you unconscious in order to heal your brain with melatonin, washed into brain tissue in the cerebro-spinal fluid. Sleep does the same, but as prevention.

Every cell in the body produces melatonin when it produces energy in its mitochondria. The best way to get a daily dose of melatonin is from moderate exercise, in sunlight, in the morning.

Sleep specialists say that to fix a disrupted wake/sleep cycle you have to start with waking up.
